The Department of Chemistry at the George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track Associate Professor of
Chemistry beginning as early as Fall 2026. The search is open to all areas of chemistry. The Department has keen and developing
interests in areas of sustainability and environmental science in support of human health and global well-being, particularly the
development and application of modern analytical methodology to trace atmospheric constituents, priority pollutants in air/water/soil
and biota, heavy metals and radionuclides, and to macromolecular questions in human health. The Department offers a growing and
popular Environmental and Green Chemistry Master’s program designed for students pursuing careers in the environmental and
sustainability fields. Other existing strengths of the department include biomolecular chemistry and computation, materials synthesis
and characterization, as well as theoretical/computational research that provides significant insight into experimentally relevant
systems.
Successful candidates will have an established research program and a demonstrated record of publications and external funding.
They will be expected to maintain a highly active, visible, and funded research program that advances the aspiration of GW to be a
preeminent comprehensive global research university, as well as the vision of the Department to be globally recognized asthe premier
Chemistry Department for education, innovation, and cross-disciplinary research in the Nation’s Capital. The successful candidate may
expect to teach courses in their area of specialty and in support of departmental needs, and potentially in the Environmental and
Green Chemistry Master’s program.
GW Chemistry is located in the Science and Engineering Hall, our unique facility that houses bright and expansive lab spaces, a state-of-the-art imaging suite, and a Class 100 nanofabrication/cleanroom facility. The imaging instrumentation includes new SEM, TEM,
FIB-SEM and Confocal Microscopes. In addition, two high performance computing clusters are available to Chemistry faculty, and
several laboratories within Chemistry and the School of Engineering and Applied Science have established, state-of-the art laser
spectroscopy facilities available for collaborative use. Our department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and our dynamic faculty
have collaborative programs on campus with the GW Medical Center, the Katzen Cancer Research Center, and the GW Institute for
Neuroscience.
Our strategic and central location in Washington, DC facilitates engagement with prestigious research laboratories such as the National
Institutes of Health, Naval Research Laboratory, Children’s National Medical Center, National Institute of Standards and Technology,
the Food and Drug Administration, the DC Center for AIDS Research and the Smithsonian Institution.
Requirements
Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or Doctoral degree in Chemistry or a related field and have attained the rank of
Associate Professor or equivalent with tenure by the time of application. Applicants must demonstrate research accomplishment
through an established, externally funded research program and peer-reviewed publications.
Salary Range: $120,000 - $150,000
