Western Michigan University is a learner-centered, discovery-driven and globally-engaged university with a Carnegie ranking of "higher research activity." Faculty research is regularly supported by federal, state, and private funding; in 2020-2021, faculty at Western Michigan University were awarded over $36.6 million in external awards. The WMU Foundation recently received an historic $550 million gift in support of students and research at WMU and WMed (wmich.edu/news) WMU is part of an ADVANCE regional partnership and the national ASPIRE IChange program and has an active Racial Justice Advisory Committee. WMU is in Kalamazoo, Michigan, one hour east of Lake Michigan, and two hours from both Chicago and Detroit.
